An Art City mural goes up in the West Broadway area. Art City is mentoring the North End Arts Centre.
About the North End Arts Centre:
WCCC 2010, along with organizational partner Ndinawe (a community development organization), opened a new arts centre in the North End, inviting hundreds of young people in the area to enter into arts activities, and to generate a sense of community responsibility that arts involvement can stimulate. So far, close to 3,000 young people have participated in the activities at the North End Arts Centre. The encouragement of creative skills inspires both pride and wonder in young people, creating confidence in both themselves and their community. The incredible things that can happen when creativity takes place are well documented by arts centre predecessors such as Art City, whose structure served as a model for the program.
In its first year, the North End Arts Centre was very successful at developing partnerships with organizations throughout the community, including local gallery Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Winnipeg Film Group, Martha Street Studio, Children of the Earth, Technical Vocational High School, and the Manitoba Youth Centre. Youth engaged in both contemporary work, including photography, painting, print-making, ceramics; and traditional art forms, such as moccasin construction, dream catcher making, drum building and soapstone carving.
