Session: Uncovering the City
Saturday November 6 @ 1:00 pm
Fort Garry Hotel, Gateway Room, Mezzanine Level
Scratching the surface of a city’s patina reveals rich histories laid down by numerous generations. Many of these histories become widely celebrated, ingrained as part of the citizens’ consciousness, and create a narrative of a singular, dominant understanding. On the flip side, other histories are paved over, pushed underground and remain there hidden, only occasionally unearthed at a much later time. History creates legacy and “place” roots this understanding into a contemporary reality. This panel opens up the concepts of place-making and historical legacy, and explores how the (un)covering of our cities can happen incredibly rapidly or incredibly slowly as our perceptions of history evolve.
