Hailed by the Toronto Star as a “young musician with a bright future” and noted for his “spirited and fiery performances”, Rafael Hoekman is one of Canada’s most versatile artists, making his mark as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. A prizewinner at competitions, including the Montreal Symphony Competition, Quebec Symphony competition, Rafael was first prize winner of the Orford International Competition. As a founding member of the Tokai String Quartet, Rafael was a prizewinner at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Rafael as a chamber musician for Jeunesses Musicales and Debut Atlantic and has performed as soloist with several orchestras, including I Musici de Montreal, the Quebec Symphony and the Newfoundland Symphony. As an orchestral player, Rafael has held positions in Orchestra London and the Windsor Symphony and frequently played with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the Assistant Principal Cellist with the Winnipeg Symphony.
