Looking for readers…and their opinions

WINNIPEG – October 15, 2010 – Writer Michael Van Rooy has found a creative way to engage non-readers: make them into reviewers.

As part of his designation as the Literary Arts Ambassador through the Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010 program, Van Rooy has created a project to involve people in the literary arts who don’t normally consider themselves to be readers. Not only will they be reading, but they will be thinking, and then writing about the books they have read. “This idea is right in line with the WCCC 2010 theme of ARTS FOR ALL,” said Michael Van Rooy. “By giving out free books, and creating a safe space to share thoughts, we are hoping to grow the interest in reading and discourse about books.”

Now he just needs to find the people who are willing to lend their time and their thoughts to the cause. The books being offered for the project as diverse in subject and style as you can get, but they all have one thing in common, their authors are all from Winnipeg.

“We are celebrating Winnipeg’s well-earned designation as Cultural Capital of Canada,” said Van Rooy, “So naturally we have chosen books by Winnipeggers to offer to other Winnipeggers. These are interesting, smart, funny, touching, scary . . . just plain good books!”

Reviews will be posted on a dedicated Facebook page and can be submitted in numerous ways; email, snail mail, or directly on Facebook. People can choose to leave their names or not. Anyone interested in becoming a reader and reviewer can contact Michael directly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

About Winnipeg’s Arts Ambassadors: As part of the Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010 ARTS
FOR ALL program, five artists have been named Winnipeg’s Arts Ambassadors for the year. Representing the fields of theatre, visual arts, music, dance, and literary arts, the Ambassadors will raise the status of their disciplines in the everyday consciousness of the public, and create a project in their discipline that will leave a legacy for the program. This book sharing project is Michael Van Rooy’s legacy project as Winnipeg’s Literary Arts Ambassador. For more information please visit the Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010 website at
