Noma Sibanda is a masterfully soulful singer-songwriter whose music is influenced by her Zimbabwean roots, Colorado upbringing, political and social activism, and human stories. Drawing on the influences of neo-soul and folk ancestors like Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone, Nina Simone, Lucky Dube, Aretha Franklin - some of the artists who inspired her during her formative years- her songs reveal her maturity and depth as she takes an introspective look at her own life.
The Guerrillas of Soul bring a powerful blend of experience, passion and pure musicality to Noma's sound. In the style of the great Dap Kings or JB's they push the boudaries of Soul, Funk & R&B. Founded by Noma along with local musicians Darryl Reilly (sax, guitar & vocals) & Kevin McLean (keys & vocals) of Winnipeg reggae giants SubCity, the Guerrillas of Soul have no problem slipping from a soulful groove into R&B or reggae. They are joined for August performances by Winnipeg jazz legends Karl Kohut & Alain Guilmette on the bass and drums.
